This manual was prepared to assist Bangladeshi engineers in the construction and supervision of retrofit construction dedicated to RC buildings. The 1st edition of the manual was published in the year 2015 under CNCRP project. This second edition has been prepared to supplement the first edition covering up-to-date information regarding numerous changes in specifications, requirements of construction materials, and construction methodology.
This second edition of the manual consists of six chapters. Most of the chapters has been re-organized to make them more user-friendly. One of the welcome features of this edition is the inclusion of a new chapter titled, 'Guideline for Estimation', which reflects the detailed considerations for estimation of retrofitting works. The other contents of the manual focuses on "how-to-practice" the supervision work by giving examples of dealing with problems that are often experienced by Engineers and Supervisors, and knowledge gained by them through the technical cooperation project of BSPP. This book was written for the purpose of helping to solve various problems faced by field engineers. Some detailed supplements have also been included in order to help in understanding the construction methodologies better. The modified materials and methods recommended in this manual are compatible with the sustainable use of materials and skills commonly available in Bangladesh.
The current BNBC (BNBC 2020) describes the role of construction supervisor, but supervisors often make decisions based on their own experience when supervising, and the method of construction supervision is different for each supervisor. As a result, building quality control is often inconsistent. Therefore, in this manual, considering the reality of construction supervision in Bangladesh, it is narrowed down to important items only by referring to actual past cases and experiences to produce a new edition focusing on the "practical methods" of supervision work. Therefore, it is hoped that this manual will be useful to engineers, architects, contractors and all the people who will play a role in helping with retrofit construction methods and conduct quality control checks to reduce the vulnerability of buildings to earthquakes.
